Stay at a Central Union Square SF Hotel
Eat, Drink, Shop, Play
A Brief History
Union Square derived its name from its early days of rallies and support for the Union Army during the American Civil War, which earned its designation as a California Historical Landmark. It was built and dedicated by San Francisco's first American mayor John Geary in 1850, with many notable changes elevating its appearance throughout the years. Today, this one-block plaza and surrounding area holds one of the most desirable collections of department stores, upscale boutiques, gift shops, art galleries, and beauty salons in the country, making Union Square a major tourist destination and a beloved gathering place in downtown San Francisco.
